Dec 1, 2017 4:30am - 4:35am (Eastern) | FINN Flashback: Tackling the aviation waste mountainThis week’s FINN Flashback looks back at the waste mountain produced by aircraft.
Estimates for the volume of aircraft waste produced every year are believed to be in the region of 6 million tonnes – a figure which is likely to rise to around 10 million tonnes by 2030. Within the US market, the volume of aluminium cans produced is estimated to be enough to build 60 Boeing 777 aircraft.
FINN editor-in-chief Alan Peaford took a look at how these issues could be solved through industry-wide collaboration efforts on waste reduction ideas and the introduction of workable policies. The International Aviation Waste Management Association (IAWMA) is bringing together airports to get policies in place and governments regulators to work together to tackle waste as the industry moves towards a more sustainable future.

Jan 2, 2021 7:00pm - 8:00pm (GMT) | NASA’s Ingenuity Mars Helicopter Succeeds in Historic First FlightNASA’s Ingenuity Mars Helicopter became the first aircraft in history to make a powered, controlled flight on another planet. The Ingenuity team at the agency’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California confirmed the flight succeeded after receiving data from the helicopter via NASA’s Perseverance Mars rover at 6:46 a.m. EDT (3:46 a.m. PDT).
“Ingenuity is the latest in a long and storied tradition of NASA projects achieving a space exploration goal once thought impossible,” said acting NASA Administrator Steve Jurczyk. “The X-15 was a pathfinder for the space shuttle. Mars Pathfinder and its Sojourner rover did the same for three generations of Mars rovers. We don’t know exactly where Ingenuity will lead us, but today’s results indicate the sky – at least on Mars – may not be the limit.”
The solar-powered helicopter first became airborne at 3:34 a.m. EDT (12:34 a.m. PDT) – 12:33 Local Mean Solar Time (Mars time) – a time the Ingenuity team determined would have optimal energy and flight conditions. Altimeter data indicate Ingenuity climbed to its prescribed maximum altitude of 10 feet (3 meters) and maintained a stable hover for 30 seconds. It then descended, touching back down on the surface of Mars after logging a total of 39.1 seconds of flight. Additional details on the test are expected in upcoming downlinks.

May 18, 2021 - 1:00 pm to May 20, 2021 - 1:00 pm (GMT) | U.S. Chamber of Commerce - Global forum on economic recovery
The global pandemic created an unprecedented economic and health crisis for the United States and the world. While the rapid development and deployment of vaccines offers hope for a robust economic recovery in the United States, the pandemic highlighted the need for strong U.S. leadership on the international stage to reinvigorate growth, strengthen trade and build resilient supply chains to support a global recovery. Investing in U.S. competitiveness and joining hands with our allies and partners, will be critical to build a better and more inclusive future - creating healthier communities, supporting entrepreneurship, and expanding access to innovative technologies.
With these goals in mind, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce will convene its inaugural Global Forum on Economic Recovery on May 18 and 19, 2021, led by U.S. Chamber CEO and President Suzanne Clark. The forum will bring together government leaders and business executives to discuss the opportunities and impediments to a dynamic global recovery.

Sep 1, 2021 6:30am - 6:35am (Eastern) | Cash in Advance - Will a different trade finance approach work for your export business? As an exporter, you can eliminate credit risk, or the risk of non-payment from foreign buyers, with the cash-in-advance payment method. Cash-in-advance is the most secure method of payment for the exporter because the importer pays the full or a significant amount of the payment before the goods are shipped. Payment is usually made via wire transfer, credit card, or escrow service.
Sep 1, 2021 6:30am - 6:35am (Eastern) | Forfaiting - Will a different trade finance approach work for your export business?Forfaiting is a method of trade finance that allows exporters to obtain cash by selling their medium and long-term foreign accounts receivable at a discount to a forfaiter, a specialized finance firm or a department in a bank. Forfaiting can help exporters improve cash flow, particularly when pursuing sales to foreign buyers who depend on longer financing terms which can stretch for months or years.
Because forfaiting eliminates virtually all risk of non-payment for the exporter, the fees associated with forfaiting are often higher than other types of commercial lender financing. In the U.S., forfaiting is mainly used by established large and medium-sized corporations that export capital goods and commodities on transactions exceeding $100,000. Forfaiting can also offer opportunities in markets considered high-risk.
Sep 1, 2021 6:30am - 6:34am (Eastern) | Documentary Collections - Will a different trade finance approach work for your export business? The Documentary Collections payment method is an approach used for merchandise and commodity exports. Generally recommended in situations where there is an established and ongoing trade relationship with a trusted buyer, this method can simplify your export transaction, offer faster payment, and reduce costs when compared to Letters of Credits.
In a Documentary Collections transaction, the exporter’s and the importer’s banks facilitate the export sale by exchanging shipping documents for payment. However, the banks do not verify that the documents are accurate and do not guarantee payment as they do with Letters of Credit. As a result, Documentary Collections are only recommended for established trade relationships in economically and politically stable markets.
